6 Tips For Cultivating Mindfulness For Busy Mums

Being a mum is a demanding and rewarding job that often leaves us with little time to practice self-care. As a busy Mum and entrepreneur raising two highly energetic primary school age boys, I get it. Juggling various responsibilities including a household, kids, work, clients and not to mention our ageing parents, whilst constantly being on the go can make it challenging for us mums to find moments of peace and relaxation. However, by incorporating mindfulness into our daily lives, us mums can begin to cultivate a greater sense of calm, presence, and overall well-being. In this short article, I wanted to share six simple tips to help busy mums like you to create little more peace within the chaos:

  1. Start with Small Moments: Mindfulness doesn't have to be time-consuming or complicated. Begin by taking small moments throughout the day to pause, breathe, and bring your attention to the present moment. It could be as simple as taking a few conscious breaths while waiting for the kettle to boil or being fully present while savoring a cup of tea. These small moments of mindfulness can have a significant impact on your overall well-being.

  2. Establish a Morning Routine: Starting your day with intention sets a positive tone for the rest of the day. Wake up a few minutes earlier than usual and create a morning routine that includes mindfulness practices such as journaling or yoga. You can begin with a few minutes of gentle stretching or yoga, followed by a brief meditation or setting positive intentions for the day. By dedicating time to your well-being in the morning, you'll be better equipped to handle the demands of the day with a calm and focused mind.

  3. Practice Mindful Parenting: Parenting itself provides numerous opportunities for practicing mindfulness. Rather than multitasking or being preoccupied with your to-do list, try to be fully present with your children. Engage in active listening, observing their actions without judgement, and savouring the simple moments together. By being fully present with your kids, you not only enhance your bond but also teach them the value of mindfulness.

  4. Embrace Mindful Eating: As busy mums we often find ourselves eating on the go or mindlessly snacking while handling multiple tasks. To cultivate mindfulness around food, make an effort to eat at least one meal a day with complete attention. Sit down, savour each bite, and pay attention to the flavours, textures, and sensations in your mouth and body while you eat. Engaging all your senses during mealtime can promote better digestion, mindful eating habits, and a greater appreciation for nourishing your body (Many women find this practice is a great tool for them to support them to better manage their weight as it teaches them to more deeply listen to their bodies fullness cues).

  5. Create Mindful Transitions: Transitions throughout the day, such as leaving work and entering the home or switching from one task to another, can be stressful. Use these moments as opportunities to practice mindfulness. Before entering a new environment or starting a different task, take a few deep breaths, let go of any tension, and consciously bring your attention to the present moment. This practice can help you approach each new situation with a clear and focused mind.

  6. Prioritise Self-Care: As busy mums, it's so easy for us to neglect our self-care, but it's essential for our well-being. Set aside dedicated time each day, even if it's just a few minutes, to do something you enjoy. It could be reading a book, taking a walk in nature, practicing yoga, or indulging in a relaxing bath. Prioritising self-care not only helps you recharge and reduce stress but also models self-love and care for your children.

Mindfulness can be a powerful tool for busy mums to navigate the demands of daily life with greater ease, presence, and joy. By incorporating these six steps into your routine, you can create a mindful approach to parenting, self-care, and everyday activities. Remember, mindfulness is a practice that requires patience and consistency. Embrace the journey, and as you cultivate mindfulness, you'll discover a deeper sense of fulfillment and well-being amidst the busyness of motherhood.
